LONDON – Former finance minister Rishi Sunak looks likely to be Britain’s next prime minister, as votes are counting on Monday afternoon. Sunak is expected to be confirmed as the Conservative Party’s next leader and British Prime Minister as soon as 2 pm on Monday. At this time, candidates must secure at least 100 nominations from fellow Conservative lawmakers to be put forward for leadership of the party.
Former prime minister Boris Johnson was the biggest challenger to Sunak but dropped out of the race late Sunday. The only remaining challenger to the leadership is Penny Mordaunt, a former defence secretary, who came out ahead of Sunak in an initial race for Conservative party leader in September.
